Areas of Expertise:
My research involves structural and functional studies of the bone protein osteocalcin complexed to Ca2+,Pb2+ and Mg2+. Osteocalcin is involved in bone remodeling and crystal size. I use 2D NMR techniques for structural determination and mice femora to determine protein mineral binding. Alterations in mineral properties and strength due to protein mineral binding are determined by Fourier Transform IR Microscopy and biomechanical measurements. Results are relevant to Pb2+ toxicity and diabetes.
