What is Asian Studies at BC

Within the minor students may take a whole array of courses from various departments in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. Any department that offers courses on any aspect of Asian history, culture, society, or economics may participate. Art, Economics, Film, History, Modern Languages, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion, Theater, all contribute courses to the minor, and participation is expected to further broaden as new faculty are hired and course offerings expand. The program does not provide a nebulous educational experience, but rather helps students develop the kind of profound and rigorous understanding that can only be acquired through investigating a common subject from a variety of perspectives and through diverse modes of inquiry. At the same time, Asian Studies helps students perceive how fluid and constructed the parameters of knowledge truly are, as they are confronted with the ways that Asian cultures have organized knowledge that vary significantly from the disciplinary parameters of an American university.

Beyond coordinating the curricular offerings of various departments, Asian Studies serves to deepen and encourage communication and cooperation between all members of the Brooklyn College community that share an interest in the study of Asia. We provide a forum in which faculty, staff, and students may meet to discuss common concerns, share knowledge and experience, and plan scholarly and extracurricular events that help disseminate knowledge about or promote interest in Asia among the community at large. Our goal is to see the college’s resources for the study of Asia grow, so that Asian Studies might ultimately be available to Brooklyn College students as an undergraduate major.
