Establishing Scholarships, Awards, and Departmental Prizes

A scholarship, award or prize reflects a specific interest, desire and wish of a donor. Many funds have been established to honor a former student or faculty member or to encourage students in a particular academic area. Establishing a scholarship, award or prize can also be a very personal and special way to memorialize a loved one's interests. The Brooklyn College Foundation Board of Trustees provides the following guidelines for the creation of scholarships, awards and prizes:

  • The minimum gift to create a permanently restricted scholarship, award or prize is $25,000.  A fund can be created with an outright gift by an individual or several donors pooling their gifts, or by making a pledge payable over five years.  A gift agreement is needed that outlines the criteria for disbursing the scholarship, award or prize.

  • The minimum gift to create a named restricted scholarship, award or prize is $10,000.  These funds do not earn an annual payout and will be spent over a period of five years.  A gift agreement is needed that outlines the criteria for disbursing the scholarship, award or prize.
