Welcome

The Department of Biology at Brooklyn College consists of 15 tenure-track faculty, and supports a wide range of research, with specialties in molecular biology, microbiology, cell biology, developmental biology and behavior, and bioinformatics.  Individual research programs are described in the following pages. Our research is currently supported by more than $5,000,000 in grants from NIH and NSF. Among other equipment, we have:

In addition, we have access to shared equipment in the Departments of Chemistry, Physics, and Geology. The library has electronic access to 28,000 journals. There are weekly seminars by visiting scientists, research meetings, and journal discussions.

Three undergraduate majors are designed to prepare undergraduates for graduate and professional schools, and for the teaching profession.  The curricula give students appreciation for both classical biology and for molecular and cell biology. There are currently about 400 undergraduate majors.

The MA programs provide additional professional training in preparation for careers in teaching, as lab technicians, and as enrichment for pre-doctoral students.

Biology and biochemistry PhD students populate the labs, carrying out dissertation projects in subjects such as biofuel production, molecular and behavioral evolution, insect development, discovery of anti-malarial and anti-fungal drug targets, organelle trafficking, cell cycle regulation, and role of cytoskeleton in cellular function.  The atmosphere is personal, cooperative and supportive.
