An Assistant Professor of Speech Communication Arts and Sciences at Brooklyn College, Isabelle Barrière’s work has included the development of assessments in minority languages used by low-income children in New York. She is conducting the first study on the acquisition of Yiddish by low-income children in Brooklyn, a project which was approved by a national scientific committee. She is also investigating the acquisition of Haitian Creole and the emergence of literacy skills in bilingual children. Her work on Haitian (creole) and Yiddish as well as Hebrew, Russian and Spanish is conducted with the logistic support of Yeled V’Yalda Early Childhood Center- the largest Head Start Program in New York City where Dr. Barriere acts as the Director of Policy for Research and Education. Her work has been supported by the Research Institute of the Study of Urban Languages, PSC-CUNY and NSF.
