Soil Testing

The affordable soil testing service is offered as part of Brooklyn College’s commitment to community service. By requesting this service, the customer agrees that the data may be used for statistical analysis and research purposes. The customer’s identity and address will be kept confidential.

Toxic Metals - $20.00 (EPA methods 3050B, 3051A and 6020A)
Samples are analyzed for five toxic metals: lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni). 

Standard Nutrients - $12.00 (modified Morgan method)
Samples are analyzed for major and micro nutrients including: calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe).

Soil pH - $5.00
The pH is determined using a 1:1, V:V method.    

Soluble Salts - $5.00
The total soluble salts is determined using a 1:2, V:V electrical conductivity method. 
   
Organic Matter Content - $8.00
The percent of organic matter (humus) in soil or compost is determined by the loss on ignition.
   
Soil Textural Analysis - $12.00
The total amounts of sand, silt and clay sized particles are determined using a hydrometer method. Soils are categorized according to USDA soil textural classifications.   

Basic N-P-K Analysis - $10.00 (coming soon)
N-P-K kits assign the levels of nutrients.

Heavy Metals in Vegetables, Fruits and Herbs - $20.00
Five toxic metals (Pb, Cr, As, Cd and Ni) are analyzed with acid digestion ICP-MS method.
