Programs/Requirements

Students seeking an undergraduate degree may earn a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Film with a concentration in Film Production, Film Studies, Documentary Production, Screenwriting, or Industry Studies.  Students who wish to focus on filmmaking exclusively, may take the two-year Certificate Program in Film with a concentration in Film Production or Screenwriting.

Students enrolled in the film production concentration receive technical training in directing, producing, screenwriting, editing, cinematography, and location sound recording. Those in the documentary production concentration receive comparable training in the creation of nonfiction films. Emphasizing narrative concepts and storytelling, our screenwriting concentration is the only undergraduate liberal arts-based screenwriting program in the country. In the film studies concentration, students explore American and international cinemas, a variety of film genres, the history of film, and film theory. Our concentration in industry studies provides the unique opportunity to study the creation of motion pictures as both a creative endeavor and a commercial enterprise.

The certificate program is an ideal course of study for those already holding a bachelor's degree or for those who do not wish to obtain one. The certificate allows for two concentrated areas of study: Film Production or Screenwriting. This program is a low-cost alternative providing the same high-quality course work and instruction and can be completed in two years. This program also provides students wishing to enroll in a graduate program in film the necessary undergraduate training required by most institutions.
