Becoming a Registered DietitianIn order to become a registered dietitian (R.D.), students must go through the following process:1.Undergraduate Training in an American Dietetic Association (ADA) accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD): The requirements of the Foods and Nutrition Concentration meet the standards set by the ADA. Students who have undergraduate degrees in other fields may need to complete additional courses to meet these standards through post-baccalaureate study. After completion of the program, students are issued a "Verification Statement" by the DPD Program Director. "Verification" confirms that students have fulfilled all the course work required by the American Dietetic Association, and are therefore eligible to continue the process needed to become an R.D. Although a grade of "D" is a passing grade at Brooklyn College and counts toward graduation, a grade lower than a "C" in any nutrition course is unacceptable to the ADA. Students who wish to obtain ADA verification must take the course over and receive a grade of C or better. 2. Supervised Practice Experience: Student who have graduated from an accredited DPD complete a supervised practice experience called a Dietetic Internship (DI). A DI is a 900 hour clinical practice program that is usually offered in conjunction with a graduate program. The Department of Health and Nutrition Sciences offers a DI as part of its Master of Science in Nutrition. 3. Registration Examination for Dietitians....... After completing the supervised practice experience (DI), students are then eligible to take the Registration Examination for Dietitians. |
