From its beginning in 1978, The Preparatory Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College has provided an exciting, nurturing environment where children can develop a life-long love for music, theater, and dance. Skills developed in arts study promote confidence and self-esteem, traits essential for any path taken in life. The members of the faculty understand that each child has a unique background and approach to learning and strive to develop the child’s potential to its fullest. The Prep Center staff work with parents to advise them about the best course of study for their children. The Prep Center offers programs and classes for children ages 3 to 18.

For Children

The Music Division offers programs at all levels of study, from beginning to advanced. The foundation of the Preparatory Center’s music activities is its highly qualified faculty of professional artists/teachers. Each faculty member has distinguished performing credentials as well as an established reputation as a teacher. Individual instruction develops the student’s musical skills on his or her chosen instrument. Classes in Musicianship and Ensembles enhance the student’s musical knowledge and awareness.

The Theater Division at the Prep Center offers an exciting opportunity for a student’s imagination to take off and fly. Students receive the technical training they need to bring their ideas to life on stage, and they learn skills which build trust and focus their creative energies. Group work is an integral part of every class. We stress the importance of regular attendance in this and other programs.

The Dance Division at the Prep Center offers classes in Ballet, Tap, and Modern Dance. Children are able to channel their energies into learning dance technique while benefiting from the sheer joy of dancing. The athletic, rhythmical, and musical elements of dance receive equal emphasis. Each student is evaluated to determine his or her proper class level.

For Adults

Adults have the opportunity to receive private instrumental, vocal, or dance instruction at beginning to advanced levels. The Prep Center offers special classes for adults in select semesters.
