The first type of Sociology Honors is Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) a national Sociology Honors Society. In order to become a member, you need a 3.5 GPA in Sociology and you have to pay a membership fee.
The second type is Honors in Sociology. Sociology majors must have a 3.5 GPA in Sociology and at least one class with an H grade of B or above. You can get an H grade in any course if you sign up for it before the class begins. It involves doing some work in addition to what is normally required (i.e. a research paper). You can also get an H grade by taking the following Sociology courses and receiving a B or better: 83.1, 83.2, 84.3, 84.4, 87.1, 87.2.
In addition, the department gives two annual awards to outstanding undergraduates.
The Charles Lawrence Memorial Award is given each year to the undergraduate student who has submitted the best research paper is sociology.
The Sidney Aronson Memorial Award is given to a student who has done outstanding work in the field of sociology that has been accepted for presentation at a professional association meeting.
