Fall 2009 Orientation

New Student Orientation a Huge Success

No one could miss seeing the students milling over the Quadrangle during the “Campus Experience” on a sunny Tuesday afternoon. The Freshman and Transfer Student Orientation, held on Tuesday, August 25, brought incoming students together for informational workshops as well as fun and engaging hands-on activities throughout the day as students received a chance to be welcomed by members of their new Brooklyn College family.

After a welcome address from the administration, including remarks from President Karen L. Gould, and a breakfast mixer with current faculty members, freshmen and transfer students attended workshops highlighting Student Affairs’ theme for the 2009-2010 academic year: “Building Community Through Careers, Leadership and Service” which were co-facilitated by Student Affairs’ and the Magner Center staff.

During the workshop, Student Affairs emphasized the Civic Learning and Student Engagement (CLASE) Passport initiative. The CLASE Passport encourages a well-rounded college experience by encouraging students to earn “stamps” by attending campus activities which highlight diversity awareness and multicultural activities, leadership skills development, volunteer and community involvement, civic learning and student engagement, and health/wellness awareness and fitness throughout the year. Earning “stamps” in their Passports entitles students to be recognized as Student Affair’s Ambassadors and become eligible for notable Student Affairs scholarships, awards, and recognition events.

The rest of the afternoon encouraged students to take part in self-guided tours, in guided tours of the Brooklyn College Library, and involving themselves in Quadrangle activities such as winning tug-of-war, jump-roping on the Quad, improvising and voicing opinions on the “soap-box” and anticipating for the future in the “Imagine” activities–which provided students an opportunity to envision the state of the world, as well as themselves, in 2015. All “Campus Experience” activities were well received by students, making way for an exciting fall 2009 semester.

Graduate Orientation

More than 300 incoming graduate students attended an evening Graduate Orientation on Wednesday, August 26. The proceedings were held in the Gold Room, the newly renovated conference room on the sixth floor of the Student Center. Students received greetings from Milga Morales, Dean of Student Affairs; Louise Hainline, Dean of Research and Graduate Studies; Deborah Shanley, Dean of the School of Education; Cory Provost, Graduate Student Organization President; and Karen L. Gould, President, Brooklyn College.

The welcome address was followed by student information workshops which were co-facilitated by representatives from the Bursar Office, Financial Aid Office, Magner Center for Career Development, CUNY College Assistantship Program, Graduate Internship Program and Scholarships, and Student Affairs. Students attended two sessions each on subjects such as “Funding Your Education,” “Thesis Writing and Comprehensive Exams,” and “Information and Engagement.”

Each workshop was well attended and the Office of Student Affairs has received follow-up requests from students. One student took the initiative to contact the Office of Student Affairs requesting information on SERVA, the College’s volunteer organization, and student government as a result of attending the “Information and Engagement” workshop which was co-facilitated by a member of Student Affairs.

The evening concluded with a raffle drawing of a Barnes & Noble Bookstore gift certificate and distribution of a free gift.
