Calculus Placement Test

The Calculus Placement Test is administered to students who have demonstrated proficiency in Algebra by taking and passing the CUNY Assessment Test in Pre-Algebra and Algebra or have met the University’s Math exemption criteria.

Students planning to major in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics, Business, or Computer and Information Science are required to take a test to determine their placement in the precalculus/calculus sequence.  The test administered via computer, consists of algebra, college algebra and trigonometry items and is untimed.  Calculator use is not permitted.  The score on this test is used for placement only and has no bearing on admission to the college.  A sample of the test is available online (select the CUNY Assessment Test, then select Mathematics.  Review the sample questions for algebra, college algebra and trigonometry).  Sample questions are also available outside the Office of Testing (245 West End Building)

You should take this test if:

  • You are planning to major in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics, Business, or Computer Information Science
  • You are majoring in another department, but are planning to take Physics or more advanced Mathematics courses (e.g., you are planning to apply to medical school)
  • You would like to take more advanced math courses as electives
