Being a student at Brooklyn College entitles you to a vast number of educational opportunities and resources. An additional method of adding to your undergraduate experience is to study abroad. As a BC student, you have instant access to hundreds of different programs in almost every country and region. Programs are available in most majors and areas of interest, so you may be eligible to take courses which will count for your major, or a college requirement, or simply a field which fascinates or intrigues you.

Brooklyn College-Sponsored Study Abroad Programs

Art and Politics in Argentina and Uruguay

This program offers students the chance to explore Buenos Aires, Argentina and Montevideo, Uruguay, two of Latin America's most dynamic cities in the middle of the South American summer. Students take one or two courses in intermediate Spanish language, the culture of Argentina and Uruguay, and the literature of the "fantastic," a unique contribution to letters by the region's most distinguished writers. Class time is supplemented with visits to a number of the continent's best art museums and historical sites, including the outstanding Museum of Latin American Art, the Fernández Bravo Museum of Colonial Art, the Jewish cultural center, and the former ESMA, the Mechanical School of the Navy, the largest detention site used by the military government of the 1970s and from which thousands were "disappeared." The group also visits the Tigre River delta on a one-day excursion up-river, and Montevideo, Uruguay on a three-day trip to attend the rehearsal of a "murga," a neighborhood choral group that is preparing for Montevideo's upcoming Carnaval celebrations, and a trip to Punta del Este, the region's most important beach resort. A minimum of one semester of beginning level Spanish and good academic standing are required for entrance.

Brooklyn College Archaeology Program in Israel

A summer (2 months) or winter program that combines an exploration of the geography, history, and current events of the Near East, especially Israel, with participation in an archaeological project.  Students take part in an ongoing archaeological excavation at Tell Bet Shemesh for 3 weeks.  Lectures and readings in connection with Hebrew University will complement the fieldwork.  Also included are meetings with political and social leaders and visits to various sites of historical and cultural interest.

The City University of New York Program for Study in Israel (administered by Brooklyn College)

A program with several options (summer-, semester-, and year-long sessions), this program allows you to study at any of 5 universities in Israel (Bar Ilan, Ben Gurion, Haifa, Hebrew, or Tel Aviv Universities), the curricula of each of these universities being slightly different.  Instruction is available in English, but learning or improving upon pre-existing knowledge of Hebrew is also required.  In addition to coursework, site visits and excursions to places of interest elsewhere in Israel may be planned.

Brooklyn College (Winter or Summer) in China

Available for both the winter and summer sessions, this program combines BC faculty-taught coursework in Speech, History, or Chinese language with an extensive cultural and historical exploration of China.  Students travel to 6 of the most famous and beautiful Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shanghai.  Field trips are arranged to sites of importance, including TianAnMen Square, the Great Wall, the Terracotta Warriors, Buddhist temples, Islamic mosques, Jewish synagogues, and many others.  This program provides students with an opportunity to experience Chinese culture by first-hand observation and interaction with local people.

Brooklyn College Summer Study Abroad in Antigua and Barbuda

An introduction to Antiguan archeology through participation in the excavations at the Indian Creek site and survey and excavation of sites in Barbuda.  The focus of this program is on investigating archeological sites of significance that are in danger of destruction due to development and erosion.

Study and Field Experience in Montpellier, France (jointly run with Brooklyn College)

A summer-, semester-, or year-long program hosted by the University of Montpellier, France whereby students are introduced to the language, culture, and political and social institutions of France.  Depending on the duration of their stay, students begin with an intensive language seminar during the summer and subsequently take courses introducing them to the political institutions of France.  Combining classroom lectures with first-hand observation and experience, this program includes a service-learning component according to which students serve as volunteers in a number of service agencies (e.g.,  food banks, places that cater to the handicapped, rehabilitation centers for children, public schools, etc.) according to skills and interests.  Accommodations are made with host families or in university dorms.  Participation in structured cultural activities, including attendance at theatrical, musical, and dance performances, is also available.

The Many Faces of Turkey: History, Identity and the forging of a Nation

A 3-week program in Istanbul Turkey that explores multiple facets of this amazing city: its religion, history, politics, art, and architecture, among others, while focusing on the themes of the city's Ottoman past and the construction of a national identity.  Students will attend lectures held by scholars in different Ottoman palaces and mosques, churches, synagogues, and universities.  They will also visits museums and monuments in both Istanbul and Ankara, as well as engage in discussions with artists and musicians.  Additional features of the trip include meetings with members of minority communities (such as from the Jewish, Armenian, and Kurdish communities) and partaking in group projects.

Study Abroad India:  Documentary Production and Cultural Studies (3-6 credits) - Winter Intercession  

A 3-week program, open to students in all disciplines. Students will experience the diversity of rural and urban India with visits to Delhi, Agra, Chennai, Madurai, Dindigul, Ambathurai, and Bangalore. Students will make documentaries in collaboration with Indian film students and learn about Indian cultures, history, religions and filmmaking through a variety of lectures, workshops, guided tours, and service learning opportunities. Unique independent study opportunities at schools, orphanages, ayeurvedic hospitals. Open to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Brooklyn College Study Abroad in India:  Global Health

A 3-week field experience program in India, will examine primary health care in a rural clinic setting in Maharashtra, India. Students will attend lectures by clinic directors and scholars and will visit villages to observe local health care practitioners.  The 6 credit course will examine political and economic factors influencing global health along with field work activities.  The history of India will be explored through visits to national monuments and museums.
