Celebrating Cal Massey with Fred Ho & the Afro Asian Music Ensemble |
| DESCRIPTION: |
Trumpeter Cal Massey (c. 1928-1972) was a gifted composer whose works were recorded by such renowned performers
as John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard, and Archie Shepp. He was also a fi xture on the Brooklyn jazz scene from the
1950s until his death. This concert features a rare performance of Massey’s Black Liberation Suite. Fred Ho is a baritone
saxophonist, composer, bandleader, social activist, and recently the author of Wicked Theory, Naked Practice: A Fred Ho
Reader (Minnesota, 2009). Salim Washington is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and faculty member at Brooklyn
College. His latest book, written with Farah Jasmine Griffi n, is Clawing at the Limits of Cool: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and
the Greatest Jazz Collaboration Ever (Thomas Dunne, 2008).
