| TITLE: |
Grow It on the Roof?! A Conversation With NYC Farmer and (Super) Green Businessman Ben Flanner |
| DESCRIPTION: |
Ben Flanner is the head farmer at the Grange, a privately owned
enterprise with a strong community orientation in Long Island City, Queens. A trained engineer with a background in finance, in 2009 Flanner founded Eagle Street Rooftop Farms in Brooklyn, the first rooftop soil farm in New York. The next year he helped to establish the Grange, a one-acre (40,000 square foot) farm made up of roughly 1.2 million pounds of soil and over 20,000 linear feet of green roofing material where kale, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, radishes, peas and herbs are grown. These veggies are sold to many local restaurants and farm stands. He will discuss with students and faculty how he got into urban agriculture, his experience as a rooftop farmer and the possibilities for businesses in the “green economy” in New York. Sponsored by the Haitian-American Students Association, Students for Global Justice and the BC Coffee Collective. FREE FOOD will be served. |
