The Threepenny Opera |
| DESCRIPTION: |
Theater. The Threepenny Opera, by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. Thursday, May 5: Opening night performance and gala reception. On May 5, 2004, the Brooklyn College Department of Theater and the Conservatory of Music will present Brecht and Weill’s modern musical masterpiece, The Threepenny Opera, inspired by John Gay’s 1728 ballad opera, The Beggar’s Opera. This special collaborative production, featuring actors, singers, and musicians in the college’s professional theater and music training programs, is being offered as part of the Arts Division’s celebration of Brooklyn College’s 75th Birthday.
Set in the underbelly of London—ruled by criminals and corrupt police, populated by beggars, and entertained by prostitutes—The Threepenny Opera tells the story of the sly and debonair Macheath, his den of thieves, and his many women. Considered revolutionary in its 1928 premiere (two years before Brooklyn College was founded!), Brecht and Weill's masterwork set the standard for a new kind of theater with its innovative blend of operatic presentation and bawdy German cabaret. Marc Blitzstein, whose one hundredth birthday we also celebrate with this production, created this dazzling adaptation, which featured the legendary Lotte Lenya in its acclaimed Off-Broadway production during the 1950s. |
