The New York Labor History Association, the Tamimiment Library and the King Juan Carlos of Spain Center sponsors a special showing of the documentary "Taking the Heat: The First Women Firefighters of New York City" Guest speakers will include Captain Brenda Berkmanm, the first woman firefighter in New York City, and Elbert Washington, president of the Vulcan Society -- an organization of African-American firefighters in the FDNY. The 53 minute documentary features Kinga Mielnik (pictured here), Brooklyn College graduate student in Geology and firefighter. This extraordinary documentary by Bann Roy and narrated by Susan Sarandon was shown once on PBS in 2006. |
