| TITLE: | The Wolfe Institute: Konefsky Lecture |

| DESCRIPTION: | Amrit Singh is a Staff Attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Immigrants’ Rights Project in New York City. She has been at the forefront of recent litigation relating to the torture and abuse of prisoners held in U.S. custody abroad, the U.S. government's use of diplomatic assurances to return individuals to countries known to employ torture, and the indefinite and mandatory detention of immigrants. Based on recently unearthed government records and transcripts, she co-authored Administration of Torture: A Documentary Record From Washington to Abu Ghraib and Beyond (Columbia University Press, 2007), which was featured on National Public Radio and several other international media outlets. She has testified to the House of Representatives’ Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties on "Torture and the Cruel, Inhuman, and Degrading Treatment of Detainees: The Effectiveness and Consequences of ‘Enhanced’ Interrogation." She has also handled several cases of post-9/11 discrimination and racial profiling of immigrants, including cases of immigrants being discriminated against by airline companies. Prior to working at the ACLU, Singh held a teaching fellowship at Yale University and was a lecturer at Oxford University. Singh holds a B.A. from Cambridge University, a M.Phil in Economics from Oxford University, and a law degree from Yale Law School. | ||

She will speak on CIVIL RIGHTS AND THE ABUSE OF EXECUTIVE POWER AFTER 9/11. In addition, the Konefsky Award will be presented to this year’s student recipient, Mary Pennisi. | ||
