How do I get an E-mail account?

Fill out an application at the ITS Reception Desk (ITS Entrance, LaGuardia Library, 4th Floor) or at the Library Faculty Lab (LaGuardia Library, 3rd Floor). You complete the top part of the form and your department chair completes the bottom part and signs it. Return the form to ITS in person or fax it: 718 951 4558.

How do I reset, change or retrieve my E-mail Password?

On Microsoft Outlook, IF YOU KNOW YOUR E-MAIL PASSWORD but want to change it for security reasons:
1. In the logon box there is an icon called "change password". Click that icon.
2. Your domain is "bcnet"
3. Type your old password
4. Type your new password
5. Type your new password again
6. Click OK.

IF YOU FORGET YOUR E-MAIL PASSWORD, call ITS: 718 951 5861 with the following information:
1. Your Operating System (Windows 98/Me/Xp, Mac OSX etc.)
2. Your email user ID
3. Your old password and Social Security # for validation [How can you provide your old password if you've forgotten your old password?]

NOTE Change of password may require several days.


How do I reset, change or retrieve my LAN Password?

Your LAN password is initially is your SS#. Log in and change your password. Change your password:
1. Go to the Sart Menu
2. Select Run
3. When the next screen appears, type either "R: or G: or I: " (depending on which is your network drive).
4. Click [Browse]and see the public folder on the drive.
5. Double-click the public folder and then click on "setpass.exe". Nows you have the whole path.
6. Click [OK] and you will see a black screen.
7. At the prompt, type your old password
8. Press [Enter]
9. Type your new password
10. Type your new password again

For security reasons, each new password is valid for three (3) months.


If you forget your LAN password, call ITS: 718 951 5861 and provide the following information:
1. Your Operating System (Windows 98/Me/Xp, Mac OSX etc.)
2. Your User Name
3. Your old password, server, and ss# for validation.

NOTE Most passwords can be reset the same day.


Why has my LAN account's password expired?


For security reasons, you must change your LAN password every 90 days. Also, if you haven't used your LAN account for more than three months, you may have to reapply for the account.


How can I change my LAN account's password?


You first have to log on. Then go to either R:\public or S:\public and look for SETPASS.EXE. Double click [SETPASS.EXE] to change your password.


How do I access my e-mail from home?


You need to have Internet access from home in order to access your BC email.

There are two ways to access your email off campus:

I. Outlook Web Access – OWA.
1. Through the Internet, go to "https://outlook.brooklyn.cuny.edu".
2. In the User ID field, type your BC email user name.
3. Type your e-mail password and click OK.
Please note: Outlook Web Access PASSWORDS ARE CASE SENSITIVE.

OR
2. Install Microsoft Outlook on your computer if it is not already installed.
Contact ITS: 718 951 5861 for instructions. After you install/set up your profile, you can access your e-mail account.


Can I access my e-mail from my friend's computer or while I'm away?


Yes, through Webmail and any computer with an Internet connection. Please refer to the question, "How do I access my e-mail from home?" for instructions.


What compatible clients can I use to access my BC Email?

We advise you to use Microsoft Outlook.


I cannot send e-mail even though I have deleted and emptied the "Deleted Items" folder. What do I do?


In some cases, you have to purge messages in order to clear the space in the server. Here's how:
1. Click the [Deleted Items] folder so that it is highlighted
2. Click on Tools->Recover Deleted Items.
3. Select all and purge all messages.

NOTE You can archive old messages into personal folders to create or save space on the server side.

What do I do when I get a message saying, "Your mailbox is over size limit"?

If you are using MS Outlook, whenever you delete any item from your inbox, it is not completely gone; it simply goes to deleted items. To remedy the problem:
1. Click [Tools]
2. Click [Empty Deleted Items]

Remember to continue to delete e-mail from your "Sent" items, as well, since there is a copy of eachl emails you send in this folder.

If you need to keep some of e-mail items, you can create a "Personal Folders" and transfer selected e-mail(s) to each folder. Personal folders saves items on the hard drive of the PC and frees up some space for you. Now, whenever you want to refer to a saved e-mail, you go into the appropriate personal folder.


How do I create a Personal Folder?

1. Click Tools --> Services --> Add.
2. Select "Personal Folders" and click [OK].
3. Under personal folders you can create different subfolders with different names in order to sort your saved items. In order to make different subfolders, right-click [Personal Folder] and click on
[New Folder]
4. Type any name you want for the new folder
5. Click [OK]

How do I transfer an e-mail item to a Personal Folder?

Highlight the item and drag it with your mouse to the folder.


What do I do if I get the following error message:
"Your logon information was incorrect"?

You may have simply have misspelled your ID and/or password. Reetype them carefully and remember that in Windows 2000 and above, they are case-sensitive. You also need your e-mail profile installed in order to access your email in MS Outlook


What do I do if I get the following error message: Your Microsfot Exchange Server is unavailable?


In some cases this error message is displayed because you the Internet connection has been lost. An Internet connection is required to access your email.


I sent out an e-mail. Why did I get "Undelivable/Error" message?


You may have misspelled the addressee. Check it and send the e-mail again. If you used and alias, try to put down the whole address.


I changed my password. Why didn't the change take affect?


Your new password must be at least 5 characters long. For further assistance, call ITS: 718 951 5861.
