How do I connect to the college network on campus?
Contact ITS: 718 951 5861. Your request must be in writing and must identify
the type of computer you want connected to the network. Most of the rooms on
campus are capable of being connected to the college network and the college
is committed to connecting as many computers as possible to allow users to gain
access to our many network-based applications and services. However, since cable
installation is expensive and time consuming, please DO NOT request cabling
for locations that will not have a PC available in the near future.
Send your request to ITS in writing or via e-mail. The request must include:
1. Your office location
2. The type of computer you want connected to the network
3. Whether you already have a network card or require one
4. How our cabling techs can gain access to your office
5. Any special requirements or urgent timing deadline
NOTE All the required information is important as it allows us to ensure that
your connection will be a smooth and successful one. Cable requests may take
from several days to several weeks to complete.
How do I get a network account (Login ID)?
Pick up an application from the Receptionist in ITS: 4th Floor, ITS Entrance,
LaGuardia Library, or from the Faculty Lab: 3rd Floor, LaGuardia Library 3rd
Floor.
How do I reset, change or retrieve a password?
Call ITS: 718 677 6180 with the following information: the network you are on
or CUNY password, and a telephone number at which you can be reached. Most passwords
can be reset the same day.
How do I request the installation of network cabling for an office or lab?
Submit a written request to the Help Desk (718 951 HELP). Specify the facility,
equipment and number of computers to be connected.
I lost my Internet Connection on Campus. What do I do? [Bold]
It helps to get an idea of where the problem lies: 99.99% of the time it is
NOT with BC. Check how well the Internet path is working by using the TRACERT
(Trace Route) command from your DOS prompt. Open a DOS Prompt window
and issue the following command: TRACERT www.brooklyn.cuny.edu. Or, issue the
TRACERT command, leave a space, and type whatever site youre trying to
access. Youll see a chain of routers across the Internet that are relaying
your traffic to us. Youll be able to determine where the access failed.
By using the TRACERT command and viewing the list of routers through which your
request for Internet access travels, youll realize that it isnt
BC thats keeping you from the Internet. Use dial-in as a fallback.
Contact Network Support to learn how to use dial-in or TRACERT: 718.677.6180
I cant connect to Brooklyn College via dial-up. What do I do?
[Bold]
There are scores of dial-up lines in various hunt groups (banks of phone lines).
Modem connections occasionally get stuck, causing part of a hunt group to be
in limbo. Obtain a few hunt group phone numbers from ITS Network Support (718
677 6180) and use an alternate access number as needed.
NOTE [Bold the word "NOTE" and tab over for the sentence starting
with "PLEASE".] PLEASE report the problem to ITS! Call Network Support
during business hours and 718.951.4501 after hours and on weekends.
Can I get a second line (additional data line) in my room and what is the
procedure?
Call ITS Help Desk: 718 951 HELP for assistance.
