Where do to I start if I want to create a personal, class or departmental
web page?
First of all, you need to have a web space reserved on the Brooklyn College
Server, where you will upload your pages. To reserve web space, you need to
obtain an FTP Account application. If you know what type of application you
need, you can print it from our web site and fax the completed form back to
ITS for processing. If you are not sure what application you need, please
call Network Support Services at 718.951.5861. The processing time is about
1-2 weeks from the time of your final submission.
What software do I need to create my page, and where do I get it?
There are many tools you can use to create your web site. Please contact Nicholas
Irons at 718.951.4634 or niron@brooklyn.cuny.edu

What file extensions does ITS not support?
It is always good to know in advance what can and cannot be done on your web
site. If you decide to create a sophisticated web site and go beyond the use
of basic HTML and images, please ascertain in advance that we can supported
your application. Currently, ITS does not support JSP, Front Page file extensions.

information: webgroup@brooklyn.cuny.edu.
How do I post a web page for my department?
Once you applied for and received the FTP account, you receive a personal your
web address, username and password, so that you can publish your pages on the
web. Once your pages have been created, to place them on the web you must transfer
them to the server. There are several FTP (File Transfer Protocol) programs
available for this purpose. We recommend to that you use WS_FTP LE.
Can I get a custom web address for my faculty or department web site?
ITS does not register custom domain names. To register a custom domain name,
Faculty or Departments must go to Internic

a third-party Internet service provider.

How do I index my site with search engine?
Search engine optimization and promotion is a set of methods aimed at improving
the ranking of your website in the search engine listings. This is not only
true for the Brooklyn College search engine but for the most of the search engines
as well (google, yahoo, etc.).
Use the following guidelines to improve your rating with any search engine:
- Use short and relevant HTML page title to name each page.
- Use reasonably sized description meta tag without excessive use of keywords,
exclamation marks or off topic comments. To read more about use of the metatags
please visit this page: http://webdeveloper.com/html/html_metatag_res.html
- Keep your page in the context of Brooklyn College and use the college name
in your descriptive tags.
- Consider different ways that users might look for your site and insert appropriate
keyword tags
- Avoid dead links and keep the pages accessible via links from other pages
on the site.
- Use your keywords in the context of your web pages.
- Use search engine tools to promote your site. Each search engine has "submit
your page" link than enables you manually submit your website to search
engine.
Follow these links to submit your site to google: http://www.google.com/submit_content.html
and yahoo http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html
