What is the difference between commencement and graduation?
Commencement is the formal ceremony where the college recognizes the completion, or anticipated completion, of students’ academic degrees. Graduation is the individual student’s completion of all the college’s degree requirements.
When are the commencement ceremonies?
The Master's Commencement Exercises for students in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences, and the School of Visual, Media and Performing Arts will be held on Wednesday, May 30, at 2 p.m.
The Master's Commencement Exercises for students in the School of Business and the School of Education will be held on Wednesday, May 30, at 7 p.m.
Are tickets required?
Yes, tickets are required for both the graduate and guests to enter the venue. Tickets have assigned seats. Please note that Walt Whitman Theater does not have an elevator; access to the mezzanine and balcony is by stairs only.
What if it rains on Commencement Day?
Commencement will be held rain or shine. Please come prepared for inclement weather.
Are there limits to what I can bring in with me to the ceremony venue?
Walt Whitman Theater does not allow food, beverages, balloons and strollers in the theater. All bags and packages are subject to search.
Will there be any refreshments available?
Sorry, refreshments cannot be provided.
Can you provide a wheelchair for a disabled guest?
The college cannot provide wheelchairs. However, there is wheelchair-accessible seating available for the disabled guest and attendant companion. If this should be a need, please have the graduate e-mail this information as soon as possible. At the entrance on the day of the ceremony, see a Campus and Community Safety officer or a staff member wearing a commencement lanyard. The services of American sign interpreters are available throughout the ceremony.
What should I do if I feel ill during the ceremony?
EMS will be on standby at designated locations. Consult with a Campus and Community Safety officer, marshal or staff wearing a commencement lanyard.
May I enter the ceremony at any time?
Please be prompt. If you arrive late, marshals may ask you to wait until processions are completed.
Where can I meet my graduate after the ceremony?
Arrange a meeting location with your graduate prior to the ceremony.
How do I get to Brooklyn College by car or public transportation?
The college is easily accessible by public transportation and car. Visit the college website for a map and directions. Please note that area parking is limited.
