Gail Smith received her B.A. from Montclair State University, and an M.A. from Columbia University. Her doctoral thesis was titled, "The Importance of Miracle to the Religion of Plutarch of Chaeroneia." In addition to years of teaching and conducting research, she served as acting department chair in Spring 2010. Smith currently serves as acting assistant provost at the Graduate Center and as principal investigator for the NSF/AGEP and NIH/Bridges to the Doctorate programs. In 1991 she launched and directed the CUNY Pipeline Program for Careers in College Teaching and Research, and from 1995 to 2007 she served as director for the Office of Educational Opportunity and Diversity Programs at the Graduate Center. Most recently, Smith was among the CUNY faculty and administrators recognized for securing major institutional grants in 2010.
