Peter N. Lipke's Web site
Peter Lipke is chairman of the Biology Department. He is also director of the NIH SCORE research program, which has as its goals the development of biomedical and behavioral research at Brooklyn College. Lipke was assistant, associate and full professor of biology from 1978 to 2006 at Hunter College (CUNY). He was MARC program director for 15 years at Hunter. His interests include science education, minority opportunities in science, mentoring and student development.

Areas of Expertise:
Lipke's lab recently discovered that amyloid formation at the cell surface activates yeast cell adhesion proteins, which has led to the lab's research in the role of amyloids in host-pathogen interactions. This idea is part of long-term studies of glycoprotein structure and function, bioinformatics, structure and biogenesis of fungal cell walls, and anti-fungal drug discovery. The lab's studies are informed by bioinformatic studies in protein structure and evolution.
Doctoral Rotation Projects:
Graduate students are learning bioinformatics to find amyloid sequences in cell adhesion proteins, and then test whether they form amyloids in vitro and in vivo. Their most recent rotation projects were to determine amyloid function in new models of microbial biofilms and fungal-host interactions, and to create plasmids to express amyloid and non-amyloid forms of cell adhesion proteins. Depending on the interests of the students, rotation projects can include molecular biology, cell biology, physical biochemistry and/or bioinformatics. Students learn microbiology.
