Born and raised in Peoria, Ill., Timothy Gura attended schools in Illinois and Michigan, studying speech education, English language and literature, and oral interpretation. He taught on the secondary level just north of Chicago (New Trier High School East), for 10 summers at the National High School Institute at Northwestern University, and as a visiting professor at Western Michigan University and at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has been at Brooklyn since his initial appointment in 1974 and is deeply grateful to have been elected by his colleagues to hold virtually every faculty governance position.
