Creative Writing

Whether you aspire to be a novelist, playwright or poet, this program will help you hone your skill and prepare to share your work with the world.

You’ll blossom in our small, highly personal M.F.A. in creative writing program, whether your concentration is fiction, poetry or playwriting. You’ll have access to single-discipline and inter-genre workshops, literature seminars, small-group reading tutorials and one-on-one tutorials, all of which emphasize the relationship between you and eminent faculty. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to work on the literary journal The Brooklyn Review and give public readings and performances. The two-year program offers fellowships and prizes as well as a winter writing residency at the Espy Foundation in Oysterville, Wash. You may also teach undergraduate courses for the English Department.

My professors were richly varied in their tastes and techniques, so I was exposed to a great spectrum of styles and possibilities, and then given the opportunity to explore that spectrum for myself.
