NYC Department of Education, Equity & Excellence for All

Algebra for All and CUNY are pleased to provide teachers with an opportunity to earn a 15 credit micro-credential in mathematics content and pedagogy with tuition and fees paid by CUNY. This graduate coursework will focus on strong instructional practice and the content that is critical to student success in Algebra I and beyond.

Course Sequence

Applicants are asked to commit to the full course sequence.

  • Spring 2020: CBSE 7400T Childhood Mathematics Education: Advanced Methodology and Practice I
  • Summer 2020: MATH 6141T Transition to Algebraic Thinking for Middle School Teachers I
  • Fall 2020: CBSE 7401T Methods for Teaching Number and Algebra in Grades 5 through 9
  • Spring 2021: CBSE 7402T Seminar in Applied Theory and Research in Mathematics Education I
  • Summer 2021: MATH 6142T Transition to Algebraic Thinking for Middle School Teachers II

Tuition and fees will be paid by CUNY; textbooks for courses, however, are not covered. Participants will be responsible for purchasing books and materials for each course.

  1. Create your account.
  2. Complete your application:
    1. Select Non-Degree Spring 2020
    2. Select Childhood Education Teacher (Grades 1–6)—Mathematics Option C
    3. You are not required to pay the application fee. The system will prompt you to pay, but simply ignore the prompt.
    4. You will be asked to enter two names for recommendations. Enter any name and phone number in order to continue the application. Do not enter an e-mail address for recommendations.
  3. E-mail additional documentation.
    1. You are required to submit a copy of your bachelor's degree transcript. Unofficial copies will be accepted.
    2. All applicants must submit a cover letter indicating application as a nondegree candidate for the Algebra for All (A4A) and CUNY Micro-Credential Program.
    3. E-mail transcripts and cover letter using "Algebra for All and CUNY Micro-Credential" in the subject field.

Course Descriptions

CBSE 7400T Childhood Mathematics Education: Advanced Methodology and Practice

45 hours plus conference; 3 credits
Development, application, and implementation of methodology and materials, and related research and theoretical perspectives. Principles and standards for mathematics curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Emphasis on teaching and learning in the number, operations, and algebra strands of the 1–6 curriculum. Organization for instruction. Literacy and mathematics. Thematic instruction. Use of technology in teaching and learning mathematics.

MATH 6141T Transition to Algebraic Thinking for Middle School Teachers I

45 hours, 3 credits
Emphasis on teaching and learning involving fractions, decimals, and percents, measurement/geometry, probability, and data interpretation. Interdisciplinary approaches involving mathematics and science, social studies, and literacy. Writing and assessment in mathematics. Diagnostic techniques, and adaptations of materials and methods for special needs learners. Introduction to research paradigms in mathematics education.

CBSE 7401T Middle Childhood Education: Advanced Methodology and Interdisciplinary Approaches

45 hours plus conference; 3 credits
Overview of the number and operations 5–9 grades curriculum strand: ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems; meanings of and relationships among operations; fluent mental and written computation and reasonable estimation. Overview of the algebra 5–9 grade curriculum strand: patterns, relations, and functions; representing and analyzing mathematical situations and structures using algebraic symbols; modeling and solving contextualized problems using various representations, such as graphs, tables, and equations; using graphs to analyze the nature of changes in linear relationships. Using graphing calculators. Using diagnostic techniques and differentiating materials and methods for teaching number and operations and algebra. Not open to students who have taken EDUC 7452X.

CBSE 7402T Seminar in Applied Theory and Research in Mathematics Education I

45 hours plus conference; 3 credits
Educational research as applied to the analysis of teaching and learning of mathematics. Qualitative and quantitative research. Use of educational research techniques to analyze teaching and learning of mathematics in urban schools. Mathematics vocabulary, reading, and writing in mathematics. Focus on children with special needs and English-language learners. Nature and design of action research in mathematics education. Selection of a research topic and questions, review of related research.

MATH 6142T Transition to Algebraic Thinking for Middle School Teachers II

45 hours; 3 credits
Topics in transitioning from arithmetic to algebraic thinking for teachers of upper elementary and middle school mathematics.
