Applying for Credits for the Gifted or Bilingual Education Additional Certification
- You must have initial New York State certification in effect (verify on your TEACH account).
- You must complete the course work certification requirements.
- You must have sealed copies of all of your transcripts, which you can order from the registrar. Ask for copies to be sent to your home. Keep the transcripts in their sealed envelopes.
- You must have copies of your mandated workshop completion certificates if they are not posted on your TEACH account. Please refer to the Mandated Workshops link for information about the new required workshop.
- You must completed the required test: CST (Content Specialty Test) for Gifted Education or BEA (Bilingual Education Assessment).

Bilingual Education

Select a grade level: Pre-K–12 All Grades

Type of certificate: Initial Extension Annotation (if this is your first certificate in this area), or Professional Extension Annotation (if you have three years of teaching experience)
When you get to the prompt for "Educational Preparation for this application only," enter program code 31826.
- Verify that your college recommendation has been entered on your TEACH account. The certification officer at Brooklyn College will enter your recommendation after you have completed your course work and the grades have been posted. If you do not see your recommendation, please contact us.
What's Next
Monitor your TEACH account, and check for any application evaluations that may be posted. Automated evaluations are posted when the computer has completed an evaluation. Manual evaluations are posted when your transcript and other documentation has been examined by an officer at the Office of Teaching Initiatives.
Initial certificates are valid for five years. You will not receive a printed certificate, but you can refer to your effective dates on your account on line.
