Stephan Brumberg's studies at Williams College and the Harvard Graduate School of Education initially led him to live, teach and conduct research in Hong Kong, Nigeria and Venezuela. He arrived at Brooklyn College in 1972 and directed his interests to the study of immigrants in New York City, and then backward in time to the 19th century and the immigrant, religious, nationality and class conflicts which helped to shape the American educational system.
