In addition to his degrees, Herman Jiesamfoek studied fine arts drawing at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. In 1991, he served as a ballet instructor at Vaganova Choreographic Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia. From 2003 to 2007, he was adjunct assistant professor at Teachers College, Columbia University. Since 2007 he has been assistant professor at Brooklyn College. His ongoing ethnographic research among the Bush Negro people of Suriname resulted in several publications on the arts, aesthetics and globalization, and around issues of social and cultural homogeneity in the changing arts culture of the Bush Negro people of Suriname.
