Eleanor Miele began her career as a research scientist focusing on RNA transcription and signal amplification. Her interest in studying biology had been strongly influence by her early experiences outside the classroom. Growing up near the beach in southern Queens, she had witnessed both the beauty of nature and the environmental degradation that confronted the growing city in the 1960s. As a science educator, her work is informed by these experiences, with a focus on learning outside the classroom. Miele's aim is to increase motivation, skills and confidence in science teaching among elementary educators as well as teachers of middle and high school science. Toward this end she has forged numerous partnerships with cultural institutions to collaborate in teacher preparation. Her work integrating informal experiences with formal science educations has been supported by numerous grants from the National Science Foundation and the New York State Education Department.
