Professor Emily Moss, conductor of the Conservatory Wind Ensemble, announced the winners of the first annual Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition as follows:

“This past Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College hosted its first Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition. We had six contestants, and all performed very well. It is with great pleasure that I announce the co-winners of the competition: David Whitwell, performing Concertino for Trombone by Ferdinand David, and Angel Rafael Merced, performing Concerto for Saxophone and Band by Paul Creston.

“Please join me in congratulating them on their fine performance!”

The winners will be featured performing their respective concertos on the upcoming spring 2011 Wind Ensemble concerts. On Wednesday, March 23, at 7 p.m. in Whitman Hall, the ensemble will present music by various American composers — including Holsinger, Fillmore, Persichetti and Ticheli — and David Whitwell will perform the David Concertino. The Wednesday, May 4 concert — also at 7 p.m. in Whitman Hall — will showcase Angel Rafael Merced playing the Creston Concerto along with works by Mozart, Stamp and others.
