Scott Dexter's research interests center on exploring the role of computing across a range of social and humanistic phenomena: While his formal training is in computer science, his scholarship is heavily influenced by the social sciences and humanities. He is currently developing a book manuscript, tentatively titled The American Android, which traces the multiple overlapping meanings of the word--and concept--'android' from the nineteenth century biology of gender to the postwar 'cybernetic fold.' He is also Director of Technology for the Harry Watkins Diary project, developing a web-based infrastructure for the transcription and editing of 1200 pages of manuscript by about a dozen project staff.
