Dr. Kurylo's graduate training included psychophysical techniques in humans and animal models. Post-doctoral training expanded research on visual processing, and included perceptual in clinical populations. Research includes basic scientific studies, as well as clinical investigations of patient populations, including Alzheimer's disease, acquired brain injury, schizophrenia, and aging. Studies have identified cortical regions necessary for select perceptual processes, as well as transmitter-based involvement in cortical integration. Dr. Kurylo has served as Principle Investigator on studies of performance and neural mediation of visual perception, including research on stimulus features and scale, retinal position, and priming and masking effects. Dr. Kurylo has an expertise in developing computer software for control of stimuli for perceptual organization measurements, which have been adapted to cognitive rehabilitation for improving these abilities in schizophrenia.
Education:
Postdoctoral Fellowship, Massachusetts Institute of Technology - 1993 (Neuroscience)
Postdoctoral Fellowship, Eye Research Institute - 1989 (Neuroscience)
Ph.D., Northeastern University - 1987 (Experimental Psychology)
M.A., Northeastern University - 1983 (Experimental Psychology)
B.A., University of Colorado - 1980 (Psychology)
Areas of Expertise:
Daniel Kurylo's research focuses on ways in which populations of neurons become integrated to produce cognitive functions. Models of neural integration are explored in human clinical populations as well as with animal models. Studies include an analysis of visual impairment in patients with brain injury and schizophrenia. Studies also include an analysis of visual capacities in animals, and changes in perception that result from alterations in neural chemistry.
