Margaret-Ellen Pipe joined Brooklyn College in fall 2006 after spending five years at the National Institutes of Health and, prior to that, 16 years as a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at the University of Otago (New Zealand). Her research interests are in the field of applied developmental psychology and focus on (1) issues that arise when children are witnesses to or victims of abuse, maltreatment and criminal acts more generally, and how they should be interviewed as part of the investigative process, and (2) memory development, including memory for traumatic and abusive childhood experiences, and the relation between memory and knowledge.
Education:
Ph.D., Auckland University - 1982 (Psychology, General)
Areas of Expertise:
Margaret-Ellen Pipe studies (1) how best to conduct investigative interviews with children who are victims of, or witnesses to, child abuse, and (2) how children acquire information from what they read and watch and how this information influences their own experiences of new situations. For example, how should we best prepare a child for an upcoming experience that is likely to be distressing, to reduce the long-term effects on the child?
