Advanced Certificate Program in Geriatric Mental Health
The Advanced Certificate Program will provide students with the knowledge and skills to offer quality mental health services to diverse older adults and their families. After stimulating academic course work and clinical internship training, graduates will be prepared to work within a variety of settings, including independent practices, community agencies, managed behavioral health care organizations, long-term care facilities, and hospitals. Additionally, the "specialist" designation in geriatrics will increase our graduates' competitiveness in the workplace and opportunity for career advancement.
Is the Certificate Program Right for You?
The advanced certificate program will be offered to individuals matriculated in graduate programs at the master's or doctoral level or for individuals already holding a graduate degree in a mental health (or related) field. The program consists of six courses for a total of 18 credits, structured to provide background in geriatric mental health while developing students' proficiency in the assessment and practice of psychotherapy with culturally diverse elderly populations.

The Advanced Certificate Program in Geriatric Mental Health is one of the few sites in the New York metropolitan area to provide advanced training in clinical work with the elderly. The part-time nature enables graduate students and working professionals in fields such as mental health counseling, social work, clinical and counseling psychology, and public health to undertake the program. Individuals from these varied disciplines will interact and share clinical perspectives and experiences within a program that incorporates a range of philosophical, educational, and clinical paradigms. Classes will be scheduled for the convenience of working professionals.
