Financial Aid
M.F.A. students typically take three three-credit classes per semester, for a total of nine credits. Tuition is set by the Board of Trustees of the City University of New York and is subject to change without notice.
A variety of scholarships, awards, financial aid, and work programs is available. Information regarding application procedure, eligibility requirements, and the rights and responsibilities of recipients may be obtained from the Office of Financial Aid (3rd floor, West Quad Center). To apply for federal loans and Work-Study funding, students should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). All admitted students will automatically be considered for departmental scholarships. (Note that, in the past, applicants had to fill out a separate scholarships application in order to be considered for scholarships. This is no longer required.)
Adjunct Information (For M.F.A./M.A. applicants only)
Students who wish to teach while they are enrolled in the M.F.A. program, but who don't have prior composition teaching experience at the college level, are required to take English 7506, Practicum in Teaching College-Level Composition. The course includes a tutor-internship in an instructor's classroom. After completing English 7506, students may be assigned to teach their own section of composition, English 1010 or 1012. Students with relevant teaching experience are not required to take English 7506 but must wait until they have been accepted into the program before applying for these positions.
