Introduction to social change in sub-Saharan Africa from the era of the slave trade to the end of World War II. Emphasis on internal transformations sparked by industrialization, imperial expansion and colonization, including political innovations, changing market relations as well as transformations in kinship and gender relations. In depth coverage of slavery, women in the economy, the development of an African working class, religious transformations, the emergence of new elites, the growth of modern political activism, and resistance to colonization.
