Pastoral, a powerful mode of mythic imagination, studied in its roots and transformations: plots and themes (herdsmen as lovers, rulers, and poets; kings as herdsmen and poets) originating in ancient Mediterranean cultures and still at work in imagination today. Return and change of basic mythemes to meet the challenges of new times and worlds. This course is the same as Classics 3224  and Comparative Literature 3602 [18.5].
Prerequisite: English 1010  or 1.7 or permission of the chairperson.
