Amerindian inhabitants before the European invasion; Dutch and English imperial periods; the American Revolution; slavery; mercantilism and capitalism; immigration, ethnicity, and neighborhood; ruling and working classes; parks and recreation; housing and architecture; crime and violence;the fiscal crisis of the 1970s.
