Student Honors and Awards
There are two types of honors given to sociology majors in addition to those available to all students at Brooklyn College:
- Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), a national sociology honors society. In order to become a member, you need a 3.50 GPA in sociology, and you have to pay a membership fee.
- Honors in Sociology. Sociology majors must have a 3.50 GPA in sociology and at least one class with an H grade of B or above. You can get an H grade in any course if you sign up for it before the class begins. It involves doing some work in addition to what is normally required (e.g., a research paper). You can also get an H grade by taking the following sociology courses and receiving a B or better: 83.1, 83.2, 84.3, 84.4, 87.1, 87.2.
In addition, the department gives two annual awards to outstanding undergraduates:
- The Charles Lawrence Memorial Award is given each year to the undergraduate student who has submitted the best research paper is sociology.
- The Sidney Aronson Memorial Award is given to a student who has done outstanding work in the field of sociology that has been accepted for presentation at a professional association meeting.
