Franco Barchiesi's latest book is Precarious Liberation: Workers, the State, and Contested Social Citizenship in Postapartheid South Africa(State University of New York Press and University of KwaZulu-Natal Press, 2011). The book is the winner of the 2012 CLR James Book Award of the Working Class Studies Association. Barchiesi has also edited (with Tom Bramble) Rethinking the Labour Movement in the 'New South Africa' (London: Ashgate, 2003). From 1996 to 2002, Barchiesi taught in the Department of Sociology at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg; from 2002 to 2005 he taught in the Department of Politics at the University of Bologna (Italy); and from 2005 to 2012 he has held the positions of assistant and associate professor in the Department of African American and African Studies at Ohio State University. He is an International Visiting Research Associate in the School of Social Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Areas of Expertise:
Barchiesi's current research compares how work and racialization defined experiments with liberalism and state formation in colonized or formerly enslaved societies of southern Africa, the United States and the Caribbean between the 1880s and the 1920s. Barchiesi's broader interests are in social and political theory, African studies, labor movements, political sociology and historical sociology.
