English Language Learners at the Brooklyn College American Language Academy
This full-time, intensive, college-oriented English language learning program (ESL) will develop your English language skills at the Brooklyn College American Language Academy and help you gain proficiency and confidence in your oral and written English skills. The program also serves as a pathway to degree programs at Brooklyn College.
Our program includes beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of English learning.
- Summer 2015: Classes begin on June 15 and end on Aug. 13 (placement test on June 1)
- Fall 2015: Classes begin on Sept. 21 and end on Nov. 23 (placement test on Sept. 8)
- Winter 2015-2016: Classes begin on Dec. 21 and end on March 3 (placement test on Dec. 7)

TOEFL Preparation Course
Coming in December — Satisfies INS requirements for students with I-20 status. The computer-based portion of the course will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at our conveniently located downtown Manhattan location. The listening and note-taking practice portion of the course will be given on Mondays and Wednesdays at our Brooklyn campus. This course is open to students who have completed an advanced level at our American Language Academy, or new students who score well on our placement and reading comprehension tests. Students can complete the ALA application to be considered for admission to the English language program. Please complete the ALA Application (pdf). Payment of $1,195 is due when you send your application.
Application for ALA for I-20 International Students
Students who are accepted to the American Language Academy and require an F-1 visa must complete an I-20 application. An I -20 is needed for a full-time language student (180 hours per term) for an F-1 visa. An I-20 is also needed for current international students transferring from another educational institution within the United States. Payment of $1,270 is due when you send in your application ($1,195 for first semester and $75 one-time nonrefundable application fee).

Refunds are issued according to the following policy:
- 100% of total costs of tuition and fees for courses cancelled by the college.
- 100% of tuition costs in a written request is submitted to the college 48 hours prior to the first class meeting.
- No refunds will be given after the start of class.
The college reserves the right to cancel any course for which there is insufficient enrollment, to combine classes, to limit registration in a course, to divide sections, to provide additional instruction for a course, and to change instructors if necessary. In the event of course cancellations or schedule changes, every effort will be made to notify registered students so they can make necessary adjustments.
