Campus Sustainability Council

Brooklyn College is dedicated to addressing climate change and creating a sustainable future for its students and the community. The Campus Sustainability Council serves as a forum for collaboration among diverse groups and individuals to identify, develop, and implement sustainable practices and initiatives on campus. The council recognizes that sustainability requires a balance between environmental preservation, economic growth, and social progress, and strives to incorporate sustainable principles into all aspects of campus operations. By working together to promote sustainability, the college can reduce its environmental impact, foster innovation and research, and create a healthier and more equitable community for all.

Goals and Objectives

The Campus Sustainability Council has been given the responsibility of enhancing the sustainability of all college operations and devising a plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, in alignment with New York Executive Order 22: Leading by Example. To accomplish these overarching objectives, the council has identified several focus areas that will guide its efforts:

  • Campus Operations: includes waste management and recycling, water and energy conservation, green procurement and purchasing practices, transportation, food and dining services, and grounds maintenance.
  • Environmental Justice: aims to ensure equitable access to clean air and water, promote diversity and affordability, and foster well-being and collaboration by sharing data and information with the community.
  • Engagement: encompasses campus and public engagement and education, shared governance, and leadership development.
  • Carbon Neutrality/Net-zero Carbon Emissions: seeks to achieve carbon neutrality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to renewable energy sources.
  • Waste Minimization: aims to minimize the amount of waste generated by the college and promote sustainable waste management practices.
  • Academics and Research: work to integrate sustainability into the college’s academic programs and support sustainability-focused research.
  • Smart Operations/Growth: explore innovative solutions to promote sustainable growth and optimize college operations.
  • Food and Nutrition: includes initiatives such as a farm share program and community garden to promote sustainable food production and support healthy eating habits.
