First College Year
Winter Classes for Incoming First-Year Students
For incoming first-year students, taking a winter class is a great way to earn additional credits and fulfill prerequisite requirements for your program of study. (This is especially true for STEM students.) It's never too early to get a head start.
The First College Year (FCY) facilitates the transition to college by integrating students into the college community as engaged learners and participants in campus life.
First-Year Advisement
In collaboration with the Center for Academic Advisement and Student Success, we offer advisement for all first-year students (incoming and second-semester). During these advisement sessions, you will discuss general education requirements, learn about college policy and course options.
First-Year Online Workshop
All incoming first-year students are enrolled in the online First-Year topics via Blackboard. These topics will help you develop habits that are essential to your academic success and promote self-awareness and self-reliance by addressing 10 topics of immediate importance to first-year students.
- Topic 1: Help Seeking and Principles of College Success
- Topic 2: Time Management
- Topic 3: Finding a Home on Campus and Forging Relationships
- Topic 4: Studying and Test-Taking
- Topic 5: Academic Research, Writing, and Citations
- Topic 6: CUNYfirst, BC/CUNY Portals, DegreeWorks, and Self-Enrollment
- Topic 7: Academic Planning and Advisement
- Topic 8: Stress Management and Self-Care
- Topic 9: Career Exploration

First-Year Reserved Courses
FCY collaborates with academic departments to reserve seats/courses for first year students. Seats/courses are reserved to ensure that first-year students have the opportunity to enroll in a minimum of 15 credits.
