CSB Cosponsored and Attended the Our Economy! Economic Democracy and System Change Conference on April 12, 2019, at CUNY
Economic Democracy and System Change, a goundbreaking conference, was held at the CUNY School School of Labor and Urban Studies on April 12, 2019. The conference was fully booked: 300 individuals attended, representing over 100 institutions and organizations. More than 50 speakers and presenters participated on 18 panels, including CSB Director Michael Menser, a member of the conference organizing team, who talked about the Seikatsu Consumer Cooperative from Japan on a panel about community food justice and solidarity economy organizing in the New York City region organized by CEANYC.
Also, Menser's two Mellon Transfer Fellowship students attended and got to meet former New York State Assemblymember Roger Green, a key member of the Coalition to Transform Interfaith Hospital. Both Amy and Deborah are doing research projects on the newly formed hospital system One Brooklyn Health. Research Associate Kobie Colemon (also in the photo) is co-anchoring the research with Menser on procurement and local community economic development especially as it involves minority- and/or women-owned businesses (MWBEs). Green spoke about this and related projects as part of the opening panel after the scholarly and powerful opening keynote by Deputy Mayor Phil Thompson.
