Coming from Colorado, Carlile studied at Cooper Union and Pratt Institute. She worked at the Printmaking Workshop with Bob Blackburn (a McArthur Awardee), printed Editions for Philip Pearlstein, etc. taught Printmaking at the Brooklyn Museum Art School, and showed at the Associated American Artists Gallery. Yearly she returned to Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah to hike, ski and paint from the landscapes that she loves. Carlile lived in a Tipi (off the grid) while she built a cabin. In 1971 she was hired at Brooklyn College and headed the Printmaking Area, BFA, MFA, Gallery, Foundation, and Drawing Areas at different times. She received several grants including the Pollack/Krasner Grant, and started a Gallery in Ouray, Colorado. In 2016 Jan was Artist in Residence at Colorado Western University concurrent with a retrospective show at the Gunnison Arts Center. Currently she is director of the studio/gallery, and Art Residency in Hurley, New York called the Art Park.
