Student Career Services

The School of Visual, Media, and Performing Arts works closely with the Magner Career Center to offer events and services designed to prepare students for a successful career. Through partnerships with staff, faculty, alumni and employers, the Magner Career Center develops programs to meet the specific needs of the students in the School of Visual, Media, and Performing Arts.

Recent graduates of the School of Visual, Media, and Performing Arts who actively prepared for their career by participating in internships and using the Magner Career Center’s services have found career success after graduation. Graduates since 2004 hold prestigious positions, including on-air overnight host for Z100, media coordinator for Viacom Media Networks, digital associate producer at NBC Nightly News, technical operator at The Madison Square Garden Company, associate producer at ABC News, publishing approvals coordinator at Disney Publishing Worldwide, coordinator at Acquisitions Focus Features, production manager and special events manager at Nickelodeon, digital media coordinator at Brooklyn Academy of Music, and senior digital production manager at Warner Music Group.

Internships and Employers

Through job fairs, the internship database, and internship panels, the Magner Career Center gives the School of Visual, Media, and Performing Arts students access to internships and employers at a number of companies including Sony Entertainment, Hot 97, ION Media Networks, CITYArts, Headless Films, Atlantic Records, Comedy Central, NBC Universal, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Stageplays Theatre Company, Richard Frankel Productions, Kings Theatre, Jujamcyn Theaters, The Society Model Management, New York Musical Theatre Festival, NYLON magazine, and WBLS – 107.5 just to name a few.

Unable to Afford to Work an Unpaid Internship?

The Magner Career Center selects winners from each school to receive internship stipends. Winners are selected twice a year, and students should apply the semester before they plan to intern.

Alumni Mentoring Program

The Magner Career Center’s Alumni Mentoring Program pairs students with a mentor in their field of interest. Mentors have come from organizations including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, HBO, IMG Artists, CBS, ESPN, Time Inc., Viacom, NY1 News, and NBC. The center also hosts mentor luncheons and networking nights as another way to connect students with alumni.

Career Workshops and Panels

The Magner Career Center and the School of Visual, Media, and Performing Arts bring back successful alumni to serve as speakers and participants in career workshops and panels, mentor luncheons, and networking nights. Past participants include the vice president of CBS Late Night, the Knicks’ president of public relations and recruiters, senior vice president of network operations at MSG, owner/producer of Glassnote Records, and executive producer at Clear Channel Radio. Events and programs specific for the School of Visual, Media and Performing Arts have included Brooklyn College Media Nights, School of Visual, Media and Performing Arts Alumni & Students Networking Nights, Entrepreneurship in the Arts, Working in Corporate Art, Internships in Media and Entertainment, Game On! Sports Careers Revealed, Alliance for Women in Media, Thinking Outside the Box: Media, and Career Trends in PR and Marketing.

Company Visits

Learn first-hand about a profession of your interest and its career requirements through a visit to a company’s office. Past visits have been to companies such as CBS, CNN-Anderson Cooper, Daily News, MTV, Essence magazine, Google, Ion Media, MSG, Scripps Networks (HGTV, Food Network, Travel Channel), and McCann. The visits are often hosted by Brooklyn College alumni.
