The Conservatory of Music of Brooklyn College is pleased to announce the establishment of the Master of Music in Global and Contemporary Jazz Studies program under the directorship of Grammy Award–winning jazz pianist, band leader, and composer Professor Arturo O’Farrill. The program will offer musicians and educators advanced training in jazz performance, history, arranging/theory, pedagogy, technology, and music industry practice. The program’s unique focus will be on the intersection of various forms of jazz originating in the United States with the music of Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Mideast, and southern Asia. In addition to traditional approaches to jazz performance practices, emphasis will be on rhythm configurations, tonal systems, and improvisation techniques not associated with European-based music. Jazz will be re-envisioned and taught as a truly global art form.

Qualified candidates are currently being sought for the Spring 2018 semester. Please see our ad and listing in the October Educators’ issue of Downbeat as well as the upcoming January 2018 issue of Jazz Times. For further information, e-mail Arturo O’Farrill or Ray Allen.
