  • How to Make the LC Work for You

How to Make the LC Work for You

Frustrated by that nagging Calculus 2 problem? Being mocked by a blinking cursor against the white backdrop of Microsoft Word as you attempt to write a research paper? Overwhelmed by lab work for Organic Chemistry while the rest of your pre-med course work begs for attention? Then the Learning Center is for you!

Too many students assume that tutoring is only for students who are in danger of failing a course or a remedial tool for those who have already failed, but the reality is that academics can be competitive, and tutoring can provide the edge you need to excel and succeed in a variety of gateway and advanced courses. Many students often lament that they didn't attend tutoring sessions until it was too late, while those who avail themselves of all the Learning Center has to offer rave about how they bolstered their academic credentials to get into the graduate school or profession of their dreams. Below are a few tips to remember for how to best utilize the service the center offers.

  • First and foremost, tutoring is free, and not many things you encounter during your academic tenure can make the same claim.
  • Even if you do not see the subject for which you wish to receive tutoring on one of our schedules, that doesn't mean that we cannot offer assistance. Many of our tutors are well-versed in a variety of subject areas that comprise numerous majors, so don't hesitate to ask for help in courses that are not explicitly listed.
  • We are firm believers in the "early and often" philosophy, which means that the more you come and the earlier you do, the more we can do to help you to achieve your academic goals.
  • If there is a course you're not currently enrolled in but know you will have to take to satisfy your graduation requirements, feel free to stop by for a few tutoring sessions to familiarize yourself with course content, syllabi, and study techniques that will make you a more successful student.
  • Concerned about your writing? The Learning Center has writing tutors available on an appointment basis ready and able to help you address all aspects of the writing process, or the "-ings of writing" as we refer to them, including but not limited to brainstorming, drafting, researching, editing, clarifying, and citing (APA, MLA, AMA, ASA, Chicago, etc.).

The Learning Center is a valued academic resource that endeavors to be a principal part of your academic success!
